Nelson Mandela, born on 18 July 1918, was a revolutionary, a philanthropist, a politician and the first ever democratically elected President of South Africa. He is the greatest influence behind ending apartheid or institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Mandela is widely considered the ‘father of the nation’ in South Africa.
Today is his 99th birthday - a day marked every year as Nelson Mandela Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 2009.
Before Mandela died in 2013, he urged the young generation to continue the fight for equality.
Today, we remember the man who dedicated his life to making the world a better place
